MADANAPALLE CITY INFORMATION

Madanapalle, located in Chittoor district. Madanapalle is a place of historical significance and is situated at a distance of 15 km from Horsley Hills also known as "Ooty of Andhra Pradesh", the official summer head quarters of the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. It was the hub of the nationalist movement before our country attained independence.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore visited this place as the Pro-Chancellor of the Besant National University and translated his immoral song "Janaganamana" into English as the "Morning Song of India". Gurudev and Mrs. Margaret Cousins (wife of Dr. James H. Cousins, the Principal of Besant Theosophical College) a great musicologist of western music tuned it jointly and sung for the first time in Madanapalle, long before it became our National Anthem.

Sri Jiddu Krishna Murthy (Krishnaji) was born and brought up here until he was adopted and proclaimed as the world Teacher by Dr. Annie Besant. Besant Theosophical College in this town is the oldest institution of higher education in Rayalaseema. Sri Trilokekar, the former Principal of Besant Theosophical College brought Hockey from the North in 1915 and for the frist time in the South, taught it to his students in Madanapalle. It also has a fine soccer tradition which continues to this day.

Madanapalle is a cosmopolitical centre. Here Hindu, Muslims and Christian live together with harmony as the communities are educated and cosmopolice.
